Earth Hour

Well, I'm just a little under 15 minutes until the start of Earth Hour. I'm right in the middle of watching (for my first time) Mrs. Miniver. But I'll hit the pause button, then shut off the DVD player at 8pm and proceed to shut down all of the rest of the house. Lights, fridge, heating, pool pump, computer, all off!

An hour of solitude, reading a book by candle light. How awesome is that?

Apache Deal

Well, it's a done deal, except for the bank giving me some money. I have a new home. I had it inspected today and it came through fairly well. The worst is some termite damage that'll need treating and repair. That's really about it.

I did get a "Sold" sign put onto the house. You never see those signs on houses outside of romance movies. This picture is the one on my home, and that is Daniel Loges, my realtor who found me this cute cottage. (Daniel, you are welcome to use the picture any way that you like!)

Hooo, boy, this is going to be a big lifestyle change. I hope I'm ready for it.

The Apache Home

I've gone and done it again. I've found another home that looks very good to me. This one looks to be much more sound than the last one. The current owner is a company that buys homes and refurbishes them. A "flip" if you will, except that they first actually put work into restoring it.

This one is outside the loop, in the northeast part of town. Actually it is just barely outside the loop, being the first light off Wake Forest road. As always, bigger pics once you click. (Y'know, I really should ask mad about his way of enlarging photos with a click on his blog...that's really cool!)

When I first moved to Raleigh, I lived in more-or-less this part of town, so I know it fairly well. The neighborhood is across the street from Bahama Breeze, a place that intrigued me every day when I drove past it that I finally asked a friend to go there with me. I am completely familiar with that whole part of town.

The neighborhood seems really good. I stood with the realtor on the street talking about the offer and giving him a check, and during that time I met at least 3 of the neighbors. Nice people all, generally younger and professionals. I could easily see many gay neighbors in the future, if they aren't there already.

So now, here come the pictures. The front is bland and boring. I'll find something to do with it though to liven things up, but I really love that I have two very big, very mature oak trees to give me shade during those hot summer days.

Here is a picture of the back of the house, from the top of the hill. The back yard has had some landscaping done, as there is landscaping timbers making tiers. I think in time I will replace them with maybe railroad ties or even stones.

There is also a nice arboretum off to the side of the patio out back. It gives the feeling of being outdoors in a quiet shady area. Lots of shade loving plants would easily fill this part with lots of color.

One of the more striking features inside is the living room. One end is a slight step down to tiled flooring, with a brick wall for accent, plus the hardwood floor throughout the main part. That brick wall has all kinds of possibilities. Fireplace comes to mind, of course. But what about even more plants. How about a vine climbing up the brick?

I really like the kitchen. Right off, it has a gas cooktop. I have been wanting to cook on gas for ages. I also like the way that there is no wall between the kitchen and dining area, and no wall between the dining and living areas. A person could stand in the dining room and chat with practically anyone in the house from that spot. It also lends itself to having a bar placed between the dining and kitchen. I've got a corner hutch that would fit the bill perfectly for storing the glassware and liquor.

There is one potential pitfall to this becoming my place. There is already a contingent contract offer for the home. One of those "when we sell our home, we will buy this one" deals. I am betting on the seller going for the "bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". But if the other purchaser comes up with the money, I'm out of luck. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that.

This will be a great place for me. Wish me luck!

Metal Water Bottles

Okay, so I am one of those people who drinks lots of water. From a bottle. I use the store-packaged water bottles occasionally especially when driving or about town. And I even fill it up at the kitchen tap (I like my well water), plus at various places like businesses.

Usually though I have a heavy duty plastic water bottle, pictured here. It's okay, insulated so that it doesn't sweat when I have ice water, and generally just fine. I read something back awhile ago about chemicals from the plastic, but I figured whatever.

Then I came across this article about stuff white people like, concerning the water bottle. Low and behold, I find out that what I'm really supposed to be doing is drinking out of a metal water bottle. I don't know, it's a stature thing I guess. I guess I need to go find me a pretty metal water bottle, like one of these.

But really, the purpose of this post is to tell you about a blog called Stuff White People Like. It is a riot, and you really must go read it!

Enjoy!

The Right Path?

This blog post is pretty interesting, and it plays into where my head has been for quite awhile now. The whole house hunting thing is an outgrowth of my trying to be independent. This is the path that I've been following, and it sums up one aspect fairly succinctly:
Mainly, I could have been a better employee to former employers and living below your means allows you to do “stupid” things like quit your job and start your own business. It’s an adventure and trying at times, but most things worth doing aren’t easy.
The key in that statement is the living below your means. I've been doing that for several years now, and it has been paying off. With a new house, I will be cutting the final line, the mortgage.

By the way, the house I wrote about did not survive the inspection, so the deal fell through. The house almost fell through itself, literally. The inspection uncovered some serious structural deficits. So it's back to more house shopping.

Radical, Lesbian, Socialist, anti-Constitutionalist

When I went to the mailbox this afternoon, here is an envelope I found:

I turned it over, and it's a money-beg from the very same politician named, from Wisconsin of all places! My name sure gets onto some interesting mailing lists!

Offer Accepted

Well, my offer for the new house was accepted, no counter-offer or anything. That makes me wonder just how low I could have gone. And it is also leaving me seriously wondering if I am doing the right thing.

For instance, I love the house I'm in now. The new one is almost 1/2 the size and it is next to the highway. Plus, I will have actual neighbors. Here is my current home:

And then there is the pool that I would be walking away from. This picture is from the pool party I had last summer, and I plan on having another this summer, just with more people, plus booze. If you are reading this, you are probably invited....

So here is the issues that I need to work through. I like the idea of living in Raleigh. And this house is considerably less expensive, leaving me with about 10k of mortgage plus whatever fixin' up I do. But I really love this house in the country. Even with the pool needing some repair, as it sprung a leak last spring.

But I've borrowed some waders so I can go in while it is low and patch the hole.

I really don't know what I want to do. At present I am continuing down the path I originally started, which is purchasing the house. I had also expected to spend the next 2-3 months fixing it up to get ready to move into. That will take me into the summer, and that's when I can hold my pool party.

I have about 1 week to make a final decision on whether I want to go through with the deal, or back out and get a refund on my earnest deposit. It will be inspected next week, and the offer indicates that if repairs are more than $2000, the offer can be rescinded. There is at least that much in repairs if done by a professional.

The idea I am toying with right now is to go ahead and make the purchase. There are several things that need doing that I can do myself. It can be my learning place for home remodeling. Those could be my weekend projects. It also gives me lots of blogging material as I do the projects...something this blog could really use.

That also puts me into the city during the weekend so that I can socialize and meet more folk. Plus, when there are events and parties that occur during the week in Raleigh, and there are quite a few, I can go to them and then crash overnight at the house. And there is a certain cachet in being able to say "want to go to my place in the city or to my country home."

It'll be a bit of a stretch financially, but there is the renter. He's been there for 6 years now, and I am sure quite comfortable. The rent covers almost covers half my mortgage payment.

In the end, it'll cost less than an apartment would, gives me a place to live in the city, and allows me to keep some of my current lifestyle like the pool and peace and quiet when I need that.

I still need to think through a lot of this. What I've written seems to just scratch the surface of the whole deal. I'm excited about doing it, plus stressing big time. I've changed my mind about 27 times today about it. But I will come to some decision, eventually.

New House

Okay, so it's not really a new house, but it will soon be mine if the offer is accepted. This is the front of the house, a 1950's style home, with 1/2 acre for Guinan to play. As always, you can click on a picture for a larger version.

The one requirement that I had was that the home is within the I-440 loop inside Raleigh. It happens to be within walking distance of NCSU, plus lots of other city things!

The major downside is that the street borders the loop, and down at the street, down the hill is the actual highway itself. When I look again today I'm going to make doubly-sure that I am okay with that.

Here is the back yard, nice and sunny and it faces east (the house faces west). This is what the kitchen and dining room see, and not the building on the left:

I really like the kitchen/dining room area, also bright and sunny. The countertops are going to get replaced, not sure yet about keeping the original cabinetry. I will also be tearing out a wall between two bedrooms, 'cause my king size bed will not fit otherwise. Debating on the living room wall.

The windows off the kitchen and dining room (on the left in pic) look out onto this deck, and into the back yard. Notice the other building and door, that is a mini-apartment with a kitchen and another room (bedroom/living room I guess). It has a renter/tenant who has been there for 6 years. He is cute so I will probably keep him! This close to the school campus practically guarantee I will always have a renter, except maybe summer.

The street dead ends, with a bike or hike trail at its end. The other end of the trail is at an underpass, which makes the fairgrounds and RBC bike ride distance, or maybe even walking distance.

I'll be making the offer this afternoon, and if we negotiate a good deal I expect to spend 1 or 2 months doing the renovations.

I'll finally be living in a city again. I figure if I can handle living in the 2nd, 3rd (LA, Chicago) and 4th (Houston) largest U.S. cities, I can manage Raleigh!

The Six O'Clock Scramble

I recently subscribed to a service offering menus for those of us who aren't quite so imaginative in coming up with meal ideas. It is called The Scramble and it is written by Aviva Goldfarb. Aviva writes a wonderful little newsletter and includes with it five dinner ideas. The dinners are fun, a little exotic because she reaches outside of traditional american cooking, and almost always easy to fix.

Each Wednesday, you receive a list of the recipes in a handy pdf. Page one contains the newsletter, an always warm home idea, letters from her fans, or home advice. The last page contains the list of ingredients, cross-referenced to the recipes. What I find myself doing is picking 2 recipes that really appeal to me, then scratching out all ingredients on the list that don't go into them, and then those items I already have. The shopping list is inclusive, such as including salt in the shopping list, because you might not have that in the pantry!

Pictured here (bigger pic) is my counter top as it has evolved recently, partly from The Scramble. The Gnochi is from a recipe I didn't get to. So it's on the counter until I figure out what to fix with it.

I came across The Scramble after a W$J article, and it turns out it was a real win for me to subscribe.

Long Weekend

I had a 3-day weekend this week and I was very busy. Thanks to Columbus Day, today was a day off ... one of the few holidays that banks take that nobody else observes. The other one being veterans day in November.

But it was a very busy weekend. On Saturday I more-or-less camped out in Raleigh for the day. I showed up in the morning for a picnic and decided to stay into the evening for some bowling. With several hours between the two, I joined in on some hiking in Umstead park, and then took advantage of the bridal/bike trails. So after the picnic, then hiking, followed by trail biking, it was off to GCF to get a change of clothes, eat dinner, and finishing up with a couple of games of bowling. I was whooped by the end of the day!

Sunday had a lot of activity, although not quite so physically active. I went into Raleigh to meet a new friend, a costume seamstress for NC State theater. He had invited me over to look through some costumes I might like to wear when I go to the Renaissance Festival in a couple of weeks. He had an absolutely perfect Prince outfit, and it fit so I am going as royalty this year!

We decided to go get a cup of coffee at the local coffee house, to get to know each other better. We also went downtown where I got to see the fallen fireman memorial, and then to Brothers & Sons antique store. This store was full of all the kitschy stuff I knew while growing up ... and it was amazing how much of that stuff was absolutely appallingly UGLY! That said, I still walked out with an analog telephone with rotary dial, plus a Tom Swift book. It's funny, I have an old phone that is at least 40 years old, and it's hooked up and works with my VOIP. When that phone was made, you saved for months to call Europe ... and now I can do it for free!

I finished off Sunday with David by going to an Ethopian restaurant. It was my first time eating Ethopian cuisine, but of course it was fun. There is a bread-like pancake served with the meal, and you tear off pieces of it to use to pinch up bits of the main dish to eat. Quite enjoyable when you share dishes. If you get a chance to try this ethnicity, don't forget to eat up the bread at the bottom of the dish....it is the best!

Oh, and while at the coffee house I picked up this oil. I love the whimsy of the butterfly wings.

NC Pride 2007

Today was the day for celebration of all things gay around these parts. The 2007 North Carolina Gay Pride Parade and Festival.

We hold our parade in late September because the temps are very pleasant right about now. Today is was beautifully sunny, 78 and just the most perfect breeze.

As always, click the picture for a larger version.

There are quite a few vendors who show up for the festival. Just about every gay organization in the state has a table and pamphlets. And of course there is jewelry, pencil art and various clothing, stickers and memorabilia to take home.

Last year was the first year the parade has had a protestor, some bunch from S.C. with loud speakers. In preparation for a repeat lots of signs were ready to be taken up in counter protest.

Luckily, the lone protester was so far from the festivities that he wasn't heard, and he had to shut down during the actual parade. The city of Durham really gets behind supporting this parade!

And finally, finish up the day at Sirens with a nice beverage.

Pagan Pride Day

Today was my first event that I put onto the Gay Professionals meetup group, and truth be told, the actual meetup flopped. I showed up, though.

But, before I left to go to the fairgrounds for the meetup, I tossed the bike into the back of the truck. After seeing a movie I found I had an hour and a half to spend before the meetup was to start. Not enough time to go linen shopping like I wanted, so I ended up at the fairgrounds about an hour early.

Okay, the last time I was at the fairgrounds I ended up lost. I finally had to ask a 90 year old "guard" where my truck was parked! That sucked. Plus I was fairly whooped from several miles of walking.

So this time I grabbed my bike and pedaled all around the place. I really think that this is the only way to go. There are so many things to see, discover and just experience and it is spread out over hundreds of acres of land. The bike easily got me around the fairgrounds so that I got to see all of the fun stuff going down.

For instance, there was the Pagan Pride Day Festival. This was a fun event to experience. In the distance hard rock beat against the air. In the festival itself there were many a tent set up, creating a mini-biazarre atmosphere. I ended up buying some stevia from a likable witch ... it looks like a fun ingredient.

There were lots of other things happening, like the grecian festival. I stopped in there for dinner, plus I pick up a silver dragon, pictured. I had a dinner of mousaka and it was surprisingly delicious. I biked through one building as they were tearing down from some sort of event for Rex Medical folks. The arena was preparing for a womens Roller Derby event. The new parking area with its stadium was gearing up for a mexican festival due to take place on Sunday. And who could fail to mention that NC State had a game coming that day, so there were a ton of 20-somethings partying big time! I've not seen that many men in red shirts since the Disney GayDays festivities last June

It was a fun day, one that I will have to repeat often.

Pool Party

Okay, so I need to publish a little more often! I'm guilty of neglect here!

I've been busy with lots of different things, and my most recent was hosting a pool party. This is the first party of any type for me in about 10 years, and it took it out of me. But it was a lot of fun and I might just have another one before the summer ends.

For the gathering I invited the people from our new Triangle GLBT Sci-Fi and Fantasy Club (affectionately known as Triangle Queer Sci-Fi) The club started last month and this weekend marked our fourth gathering.

Lots of people showed up, swimsuits and towels in hand, ready to splash in the water. It was a beautiful day, mid-80s and all sunshine. Here are some pictures, plus more pictures at the group photo album.

The fun started off with a couple of hours playing in the pool.
There was lots to eat!
And to round things out, we all went indoors for the evening to play a few rounds of Apples to Apples. I would never have guessed we could get 11 people around my dining room table!

It was a fun day. I might have to try this again!

Superhero Returns July 26th

It looks like Who Wants To Be A Superhero is coming back for Season 2 and is on the schedule at Sci Fi for next month. Although I cannot locate any news information about the new season, it is slated to return on July 26th at 9pm.

AfterElton reports that this season will have a gay person present, although I'm not sure if we this is a superhero that is gay, a gay superhero, or a gay alter ego (talk about a special closet!) Pictured is a photo that AfterElton managed to snag of our hero, Parthenon.

In the first season, our gay superhero was out practically at the very start of the show. We had no chance to get to know anything about Levity. Hopefully this time will be different.

In any event, Parthenon, nee Dan Williams, is a utterly cute, and even has that wholesome superhero look to him. I'm already rooting for him, and I've not seen even the first promo for the show!

Mark your calenders, July 26th for season 2 of Who Wants To Be A Superhero!
